Retailers usually like to kick off to a good start in the new year and because they know sale drops big in January, they’re quick to offer post-holiday deals and to lower prices for anything starting with groceries and various foods to some technology items and home goods.

Canadians much like Americans and much like many people anywhere else in the world take New Year’s resolutions very seriously, at least until the last week in January or thereabouts when they realize there are bigger fish to fry than losing weight instantly.

Christmas decorations, wrapping paper and holiday cards are sold cheapest immediately after New Year’s Eve and it might surprise you or you may think it’s way too early for it, but many shoppers keep a budget for exactly this time of year and exactly this type of stuff.
So if you were staring at the Christmas tree last year disappointed and you feel it’s time to replace your old ornaments and decorations with something new, take all through January to shop. Nativity scenes feature really good discounts now.
Various other merchandise that goes on sale in January
January is a great month to purchase merchandise for which you’d normally have to pay full price at other times of the year. But of course everyone wants to avoid that and save whenever possible, so here are a few other things aside from diet foods and holiday decorations to save on this month.
- Candy: Chocolate and all sorts of chocolate go cheaper in January and that’s a fact. Walmart and other big shot supermarkets are likely to discount sweets and treats throughout January but even your local candy store may put out some sweet deals, so be on a lookout for these if you need supplies.
- Cold medicine and vitamins also sell cheaper this time of year because it is the flu season after all and lots of people fight to ward off colds and bugs. Luckily for anyone with a weaker immune system, over-the-counter treatment is cheapest right when it’s needed.
- Bedding and towels are offered with some of the deepest discounts now as part of the white sale strategy that many retailers adopt in January to increase sale. Find quality sheets and blankets all throughout the month.
- Toys, particularly clearance Christmas toys are another type of merchandise that goes on sale in the first month of the year along with some organization items and small appliances.
Also be on a lookout for computers and tablets but just know that it’s the older models that will sell cheaper now, so if you’re not interested in some high tech you’ll probably find something to suit your preferences this month.
