5 bread varieties that you must try

How much bread have you eaten in your life – prepare for more, and how many varieties have you tried – there are more than 100 different types in the world?

Cakes and pastries aside, bread is a top indulgent baked good for a majority of Canadians. Fresh rolls, buns, fresh white loaf are all grocery staples and a bit on the indulgent side of foods since they don’t exactly fall in the healthy aisle.

But if you’re doing good throughout the week, and are doing your best to support a healthy diet during the work week, then you most definitely deserve a little bread treat on the weekend.

Here are some choices in the great variety of breads to bring the world one step closer to you. If you can’t find these breads in your local supermarket, no worries. Making them at home is a no brainer and they require basic ingredients that you should have no problem finding.

Tsoureki Greek Sweet Bread – is traditional braided bread made at Easter time in Greece. Brioche-like and rich, it is commonly enjoyed slathered with butter for breakfast.

This is a great choice if you are looking for an alternative to the usual Easter bread in your family. Traditionally, the bread is decorated with red-dyed eggs between the strips of the braid.

Msemen Moroccan Bread – is a type of Moroccan bread similar to thick crepes. Like crepes, it is cooked in a pan with only a little bit of oil and is most commonly served for breakfast alongside soft cheese, eggs, or can be enjoyed with honey while still hot.

Mint tea or coffee is a complimentary side to this square shaped soft and fluffy bread. You can also fill Msemen with various ingredients, such as cheese and oregano or something sweet.

Dampfnudel German Bread – is mostly eaten in Southern Germany and is shaped as dumplings. The bread is sweet and usually has a caramelized bottom and a soft fluffy top.

Legend has it that these sweet little bread treats spared a German town from the attack of Swedish invaders back in the times, that’s how special tasting they are. The dumplings can be sweet or savory and if you’re going for comfort food, try the sweet version that is bathed in vanilla custard.

Crumpet Flatbread UK – crumpet is a type of flatbread from the UK similar in look and taste to English muffins, but lighter and with pores on the upper surface.

Crumpet is often served with tea in the UK, toasted and topped with golden syrup, clotted cream and jam, or honey and butter. It is also served savory.

Mollete White Bread Spain – is a type of flatbread from Andalusia, Spain served as breakfast food.

These soft breads are cut into halves, then toasted slightly and drizzled with fine extra virgin olive oil.

You can also spread them with fresh crushed tomatoes, refried beans or cheese. You can add any topping over it, and if you spread a little bit of butter before the toppings, that will enhance the flavor of the ingredients.
